On August 31, a memorial in honor of the sailors of the Polar convoys was solemnly opened on Bolshoy Smolensky Avenue, in front of the Maritime College of the State University of Maritime and River Transport named after Admiral Makarov.
The opening of the monument was timed to the 73 anniversary of the arrival of the first convoy in the USSR "Dervish ." The sculptural group with a height of 2.7 meters is a figure of Russian, British and American sailors standing on the bow of the ship. On the pedestal there are carved lines of poems dedicated to the sailors of the Polar convoys: "These are your fathers and grandfathers, pray for them, sailors!"
Delegations from the UK, USA, France, Belarus arrived at the opening ceremony. The veterans observed a minute of silence in memory of the dead participants in the convoys and laid wreaths and flowers at the monument.
