January 18 St. Petersburg celebrates 73 anniversary of the breakthrough of the blockade of Leningrad

73 years ago as a result of the operation "Iskra " the Soviet army broke through the blockade ring, liberated Shlisselburg and restored the city’s land connection with "Big land". “The blockade was broken at the cost of many thousands of lives of the fighters of the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts. Their courage and heroism will forever remain in our memory, ”says the address of Georgy Poltavchenko and Vyacheslav Makarov.

Today at 14:00 a descent to the water opposite the Fontanka 21 will be held “Candle of memory” with the participation of World War II veterans, residents of besieged Leningrad, schoolchildren and cadets. Here you will hear stories about life in the besieged city and poems, and then candles will light and flowers will be laid.

Memorial sign "Days of the blockade" was installed in 2001 on the descent to the Fontanka River, opposite the house 21. The inscription on a gray granite slab reads: "Here, residents of besieged Leningrad took water from an ice hole."
